DOS for ProDOS, pt.2
Been thinking, yeah I know it's not good for me lol
Well, I just looked over some of the DOS disassemblies on
http://bobsc5.home.comcast.net/aal and while I haven't found enough info
to do the deed, I've found some insight.
The disassemblies cover the following areas of DOS: $B052.$B0B5, $B35F.$BFFF
This isn't all of DOS but it does reveal that the only code that overlaps
the ProDOS page, other than a couple initialization tweaks, is the disk
format code. Good. Moving the patches down to between $BEAF and $BEFF if
they're really necessary should suffice; and INIT can be removed from the
vocabulary (possibly replaced by BYE).
So now the big question is, is there room to replace the File Manager and
RWTS with ProDOS calls? I don't think it's out of the question.
Next step:
1. Revise DOS 3.3 to leave $BFxx free, disable INIT (possibly adding a
BYE stub), and load as a binary program at $2000, relocating itself.
2. Revise DOS 3.3 to use ProDOS for file reads and writes and complete
BYE. At this point it should still be able to RUN HELLO on its own.
3. Revise DOS 3.3 to use ProDOS for CATALOG (using a shorthand format or
possibly even a modified 3.3 format so that KEY-CAT will work!)
