disk drives fight to read them but eventually give up on tons of

I've had diskettes in the past with moldy spots (about a quarter
inch in diameter, somewhat irregular). Apparently, some diskette
manufacturers used a lubricant coating that is edible to a mold.
The ones I had were still readable, so maybe it's possible to
coax a good read out of them...
If it comes to it, I may try removing them from their (infected)
sleeves, washing them gently, and inserting them into another
sleeve for reading.
