Wasn't the printer designed and built by a third party, with the key
difference being the firmware to make it an "Imagewriter"?

C. Itoh comes to mind, but it might have been someone else.

I'm sure I've seen reed switches used for the purpose in other printers,
so it was likely a common practice, though the specific reasons don't
seem clear.
