I don't really want to use the LCIII for "computing", but as an ethernet gateway or something like that...I'd use the LCIII as a file server for the IIgs. Use a Mac printer cable to connect the two via AppleTalk and then use the Mac to pull files off the net. I'd recommend System 7.5.5, iCab for http and Fetch for ftp and Appleshare v3 on the Mac.I'd throw out the Mac LC III, get an Uthernet for the IIgs, plug the Uthernet into your Router, and use the IIgs to get files straight from the internet itself. It works great and will help Glenn to do even bigger and better things like USB for the IIgs, and maybe the IIe as well. Also, the Uthernet works on the IIe, too.Can I use Contiki to FTP files to a //e? Any others? -michael Music synthesis for 8-bit Apple II's! Home page: http://members.aol.com/MJMahon/ "The wastebasket is our most important design tool--and it is seriously underused."Hi Michael, yes you can use Contiki to FTP files to a IIe ... the client is bare bones though and could use some TLC to make it be a little more useful.I guess I'm wondering if it is a viable replacement for 1.4MB disk or CFFA sneakernet. Any file size limitations? Speed?
I don't think there are any file size limitations... speed is limited to the disk device you happen to be using and or the card throughput. Writing 5.25 disk images is currently limited to 5K per second (avg) for instance due to the way Oliver had to handle it.
Issues with the current ftp client are limited support for directory navigation (there is no local side navigation and only minimal support for server side navigation plus no file listing scrolling, so if your looking for a file and the list is more then one screenful long you can't get to it.
Not sure what you meant about others?I just wondered if there were any alternatives for file transport. Sounds like the answer is no.
Well the wget program will transfer files or whole disk images from a http server. This works well for diskette images and is ok for files (limitation here is the filetype info is lost but you could shrink them up and unshrink them on the Apple side). There is limited support on the apple side so the disk images currently only go to S6,D1 and files will be placed whereever Contiki is launched from I beleive.
I use a program called Http file server by Massimo Melina (www.rejetto.com)to host files I want to transfer to my Apple's.
