Re: another source for HD for Focus and other uses for 2.5 drives

On a similar note: I was attempting to get a Vulcan Gold with a blown
ancient 100mb hard drive to live again. Reaching into my box of ancient
drives liberated from old 386 and 486 PCs destined for that great
landfill in the sky, I took out a trusty floppy formated and including
ProDOS and the GOLD (not the earlier black) version of Part.Manager (
the Vulcan format utility) and proceeded to attempt a recovery. Unlike
later IDE solutions, the Vulcan, being on the bleeding edge of the move
away from SCSI will not accept all IDE drives but ONLY such drives as
it includes the information about in its descriptor table in the
firmware. That is why the Gold is better then the balck: Longer list,
later developed, more drives accepted. But alas....not ALL drives. and,
none I had <grumble> For this chore some specifiv guidlines are in
order: No drive larger then 500 meg will work. Some types such as the
Western Digital Caviar series are right out. IBMs will work but the
Vulcan thinks they are Conners, and other such weirdness. Best bets
are Conner Fujitsu and early Seagate.

Anyway, NONE of my 3.5s worked so.... on to plan B: I looked at my
little box of 2.5 drives and...humm square peg, round hole..... A
trip to a local electronics emporium and I had a gadget that converted 2.
5 to 3.5 and RATS, wrong way. Back to the store!..... now where was
I ..oh yes...

Back to Parts.Manager and.... Eureka! (on the way to Modesto...) I
have a drive Parts.Mangaler is familiar with! A Conner CP2124 This 2.
5 drive, pulled from some antiquated Compaq laptop, is perfect for the
Vulcan Gold. it is 121 mb and partitons into 4 logical drives. Just
thought I would toss this into the pot
