And a curious one at that, since it would only light if the speaker

I have seen a similar mod on a couple of Apple II Plus machines but it was
years ago - and the LED was mounted externally. The reason for the mod was
that the primary users were deaf and programs that used the bell to prompt
for input couldn't be heard - they were using apps for people with special
needs, but not all of them were programmed to take into account for the
needs of the deaf. One speaking program would beep twice after input, to let
the user know it was ready for the next input for speech synthesis. It
worked well for people who were blind and mute but could hear, but not at
all for people who were deaf and mute, but could otherwise see.

Maybe Ed got one like it. I don't ever recall seeing a stock ][+ with one.

Interesting.  I almost suggested that this was the only application
I could think of for such a mod, but decided it was improbable.  I
guess I forgot to multiply by the very large number of Apple II's.  ;-)
