Re: Removing the processor from a Transwarp GS



Well, I was able to pop the processor out... that was surprisingly easy to do.... but now I'm a little confused on something else....

The processor and ocilator I bought came with some extra stuff (it came from someone who had bought some to do this upgrade himself.)

So there's like two processors in this package:

one has this printed on it:

WDC
W65816S8PL-14
SA9427A

The Other has this printed on it:

WDC
W65816PL-7
OP8947C

I think the first one is a 14Mhz one and the second one must be a 7Mhz one that was removed from another TranswarpGS already but I just want to double check/

Also I have a question ....

I have two TWGS cards... the first one I got about a year ago... it has 25Mhz ocilator so I guess that's like 6.25Mhz processor speed... And I have a 32k cashe installed on it.... this one could never run the NinjaForce MegaDemo neither before nore after upgrading the cashe.

I have another TWGS card I bought a few months ago that has a 28Mhz ocilator on it for 7Mhz processor speed.... this one has an 8k cashe and was able to run the MegaDemo.... Also when I put this one in, I noticed the computer just felt faster.

Is it likely that there's something wrong with the first one or could .75Mhz really make a difference like that? Should I not bother putting the 14Mhz processor on this card and upgrade the other one instead? I presently don't have any real benchmarking software to see what's going on.

    It's called a PLCC extractor. The one I have is a flat piece of metal
with a small curved hooked end, almost like a pick. I've been able to
create makeshift PLCC extractors in the past using just a paperclip, by straightening it out and bending the it at the very end (a small bend,
just enough to slide under the chip for leverage).

    You need to be careful though, you can end up cracking the plastic
around the socket if you use too much force or the paperclip (or similar
makeshift tool) isn't bent/hooked just right.
    Here's an example of what the proper tool looks like (mine is much
smaller, it came free with a chip firmware upgrade for an old modem):
