I've found Davex to be useful for this kind of stuff.  With a few tweaks,
it's almost UN*X-like.

Can't help you here...never tried using DOS 3.3 from a hard drive.  (I never
had much use for DOS 3.3, even before buying my first hard drive way back
when.  ProDOS was much faster, and the apps I used (AppleWorks, PublishIt!,
ProTERM, etc.) all ran under ProDOS.)
