Input from what? etc., etc.
Generally, you do character I/O by calling a "driver" which
manipulates registers, handshakes, etc. to accomplish the
task. But what you are talking to and how it's connected
are crucial to the answer.
If you are talking about the built-in text display, or the
keyboard, then the firmware to control the operation is already
provided in ROM.
