I got another cable made up, and there is actually signs of activity.

both lights that are on are TR and CS

The init string at&f1 works, and says OK

But now when I try to even dial out, the TR light goes out and comes
back on when the command thing comes up.... but no dial out. and same
goes for the modem speed change.

is there a specific init string that sets it up so that modem manager
can talk to it?
