As others have pointed out there are a number of ampersand routines
available for AppleSoft from various places.

However, if you are going to be working in BASIC why not use GSoft
BASIC?  There used to be a free version you could download that had
some limitations but it lets you do practically everything you can do
with AppleSoft but with lots more power and you get to use the Super
Hi-Res screen instead of just Hi-Res.

You can also do toolbox programming at a later date if you want to get
really fancy.
