I don't think any OS X systems support Apple's legacy floppy drives,
which are the only devices that can physically read/write an 800K disk
(ProDOS or otherwise.)
OS X can support USB floppy drives, but they will only support 720K and
1.44M media, neither of which is compatible with the drives used in the
Apple II series.
If you need to read/write ProDOS discs, you will need a Mac running
system 6-9. This is one of the reasons I haven't thrown out my old
Macs (a Quadra 840av running 8.1 and an SE running 6.0.8).
