Yah, I had similar thoughts...

May I suggest you check out Rob Swindell's Excellent Telnet-based BBS
software SynchroNet (http://www.synchro.net/)

It would be a neat hack to add ProTerm emulation, but not impossible. It's
free, and now open-sourced. Windows and Linux - has FTP, WWW, telnet, news,
etc. - very well rounded and what I like best, works with old door games
like TradeWars.
