You don't want to connect the shield to both ends of the cable, you
only want it connected on one end.  If it is connected on both ends
you run the risk of creating a ground loop between the two machines
that you connect together.

I don't remember where I got it but I have a 9 pin female to 25 pin
male modem cable for my PC that is about 8" long so I ended up making
a 8 pin mini-DIN male to 25 pin female null modem cable for my IIgs
that is at least 5' long.  Connecting these two together gave me the
ability to do null modem connections between my IIgs and PC.
