What's your application? If you want to boot in a hurry (relatively
speaking) and go diskless, you might consider a CFFA card.

keep RAM on the motherboard powered?

Would be cool to have a system that you turned on,
and no loading occurred at all.  The processor just
executes current software in RAM.

I think that's called "leaving it on".  ;-)

Seriously, since the DRAM is refreshed by the video generator,
much of the machine would have to be in operation to keep the
DRAM contents.
