Re: To: Bryan Parkoff
Rich,
MPU is the same as CPU. It stands for microprocessor unit as central
processor unit. I believe that MPU was used in 1970s when it was renamed to
CPU in 1980s according to my understanding and opinion. I always refer MPU
from Apple II technicial articles including Jim Sather's manual.
I wrote a complete MPU6502 emulator which it has cycle by cycle unlike
other emulators use instruction by instruction. The first Apple II+ with
MPU6502 ran at 1MHz, 2MHz, 4MHz and 8MHz on my Xeon Pentium III 550MHz
according to my test. Hopefully, it runs faster on Pentium IV and later. I
will try to compare cycle by cycle emulator and instruction by instruction
emulator which one of them may run faster or slower, but I claim that it
seems to be the same according to my theory.
I concentrate to work 6502 debug since I have completed MPU6502. This
6502 debug has two options. Two options are the cycle by cycle and
instruction by instruction.
I do not have my own home webpage. I plan to build it probably next
year or so. My hobby is involved in C/C++ language and assembly language
and electronic information. Most assembly programmers claim that they are
no longer write assembly languages while their time is wasting because it
may run slower on Pentium IV and future processors. If they attempt to
optimize by their own hand, it will never optimize properly on Pentium IV
and future processors. They said that they prefer to stick with Intel C/C++
Compiler 7.0 or later which it can optimize C/C++ codes better than assembly
language. It is what Intel encourage them to do this.
I have no opinion what Intel and the assembly programmers think, but
assembly language may be necessary for device drivers only and also it can
be used for earlier processors such as 80386 or 80486 for optimization by
hand. I am sure that C/C++ language can do its good job for speed
(optimization). It is what I am using C++ source code mostly, but I still
use C style and C keyword in C++ source code.
Please feel free to ask questions.
