: I haven't had any luck imaging the "damaged" media. I'm using Mac OS X

Well, having no MAC OS X experience, I couldn't say if that is
the correct procedure, but if it is, why the hell doesn't Apple
ever use normal terminology. Where I come from it is normally
referred to as a "global image", or .GI
There is also an image that has the suffix, .ISO, which you
can use to burn an image made in other formats, such as, HFx,
DSK, and the like. I use it to burn 32MB ProDOS images onto
CDs, or HFS images for Macintosh. On my burner program, there
is a Disk explorer which tells the images data sections and
when and how they were created. This is where I capture the
GI image of a CD. This image can then be nurned back onto
a new CD-R or CD-RW. Kind of like Bitcopy for floppy disks.
Since the disk may be out of sync due to the label being
off-center, the global image capture continues to try to
read a track until it gets it all. I've repaired many of
the ones I made with paper labels this way.
As far as Sharpies go, I use BIC markers and have had no
problem with them marring the reflective surfaces. :o)
