Re: Do people still actually use Apple 2?
Despite Steve Jobs' assertion that 'Nobody uses an Apple II anymore', I must
say I use several every day in running my business. And thats due to one
program, primarily: Classic AppleWorks 5.1 enhanced with dozens of custom
macro sets.
Of course, I also use several PowerMac G3s in the business. I use them to
access the web, retrieve e-mail, and do Photoshop / Illustrator / PageMaker
/ Acrobat type things. While I still keep a running PublishIt!4 on my Apple
IIs, the Mac is a better graphics machine and you _need_ it to prepare
brochures for commercial printing houses. I'm not a total crackpot.
You know, I _own_ FileMaker Pro 6 and MicroSoft Office 2001 and I _still_
find that my supercharged AppleWorks 5.1 on my supercharged IIGS's is a
better, simpler and more efficient solution for _my_ types of applications.
My AppleWorks isn't driving some old ancient ImageWriter printer. It runs a
couple of multi-bin HP LaserJet 4050s with envelope feeders and well as some
other impact printers.
I've investigated putting my accounting and payroll systems on the Mac with
Quickbooks or MYOB, but to be honest, I don't _need_ that complexity in my
operations. I've got a BASIC Payroll program that I bought _years_ ago (for
good $$$). It came with commented listings and I've modified it over the
years for all the governmental changes. Works great, simple and fast.
I still use a _heavily_ added to and modified version of BPI accounting that
I bought _years_ ago. It works great, but man, I've got hours of my life in
re-writing much of it. I suppose part of that was necessity, but most of it
was that I enjoyed doing it. Run that puppy through the Beagle Compiler and
it's amazing how fast the BASIC code runs.
Maybe Jobs should have said 'No _normal_ person uses an Apple II anymore'.
I'd agree with that. My friends and business associates think I'm nuts.
