The 68000 through 68020 didn't have them either, and they WERE designed
for serious computing.  I'm not sure when they become commonplace on
processors (as opposed to external units, which they were on the minis
and mainframes, and the 68020 for that matter), but it was long after
the 65816 made its debut.
