If the BBS software you are connecting to has some way for you to tell
it to immediately pick up the line (ie. send the modem an ATA command)
then this would work.  However, I believe most BBS software will only
send the ATA command to the modem when it receives a RING signal from
the modem which you won't get with the method Ed suggested.
