Re: Disk drive speeds

Commodore with 1541 and Professional or Prologic DOS would possibly be even faster. AFAIR the order of speed (immediately after power-up) was:

1. Professional DOS
2. Prologic DOS
3. Dolphin DOS.

All three were fast enough to smoke the rest of the possible competition out though.

All three use a parallel connection between the C64 and the 1541. A while ago I took some measurements with a benchmark program published in 64'er magazine long long ago. I'll convert the numbers to kB/s for easier comparison as well. For the C64, the magic program size is 202 blocks, which corresponds to a program that starts at $801 and ends at $CFFF (50kB), so all tests are made with this size, and they include the directory lookup.

For comparison with a harddisk, I also include tests with a CMD HD, connected with a parallel cable as well. The other C64 harddisk, the IDE64 is connected directly to the C64 and said to be much faster.

                       x-factor time kB/s
CMD HD Parallel 57.7 2.2s 20.0
Professional DOS L2 32.5 3.9s 12.8
Prologic DOS Classic 28.2 4.5s 11.1
Dolphin DOS 2.0 26.5 4.8s 10.4

Professional DOS has some special software switches which can make it even faster. All numbers were taken after power up.

I would also be interested in how the fastest Apple][ floppy rigs performed.

Me too.

As for the Ataris I am already enlightened a bit. ;-)

Did they have a parallel connection at all?
