I have one in my IIgs and I love it. I use it mostly to communicate with
Syndicomm. It does work with an Apple IIe but unfortunately there is no
software written for it on that platform.
On a IIgs it works with the Marinetti TCPIP stack thus compatible with any
application designed to work with Marinetti. For telnet Marinetti comes
bundled with a very basic client and there is also Kim Howe's telnetNDA.
For ftp there is Geoff Weiss's gw-ftp which is a very basic command line
ftp client. Then there is also Ryan Suenaga's series of tcpip utilities,
DictioNDA, MailChecker.NDA, MyIP.NDA and TheirIP.NDA which all do various
things.
However to really get the most out of LANceGS card you really have to have
Ewen Wannop's Spectrum. This is a really good Comm program with an
extensive scripting language. Right out of the box it gives you a VT100
compatible telnet client. Add Ewen's free script addons and you get a GUI
ftp client (SAFE), a mail client (SAM) and a Syndicomm off-line reader
(SOAR). You can then add Geoff Weiss's web browser (SIS) which gives you a
very basic client. The downside to Spectrum is that you really need at
least 4MB RAM and a good accelerator card.
Another downside to LANceGS is that it doesn't do Appletalk at all. If you
want to access Appleshare volumes you have to use the IIgs's built-in
Localtalk ports.
Is it worth it? For me yes but unless you're a hard core Apple II guy,
maybe not.
