Yes- the pin numbers are molded into the plastic, though I need a
magnifier to read 'em. Go with the numbers. I usually sketch it all out
and double check, because it is so easy to make a mistake.

This is because the "send" wire from one computer goes to the "receive"
wire of the other.  Like phones- if your mouthpiece connected to the
other phone's mouthpiece, they couldn't hear you. Your mouthpiece
connects to their earpiece, and vice versa. Same with null-modem
cables. 

Have fun. You can really hose files over now.
