My wife, who grew up in South Africa, tells me that the "za" designation
stands for "Zuid Afrika", which is Afrikaans for "South Africa". :)

South Africa is a *country*. South America is a *continent*. I'm not
aware of any URL domain designations that cover entire continents, so I
doubt that there would be any such "conflicts" as you mentioned. ;)
