If you can run ProDOS, I really think you should try to get Merlin Pro
working. It's a fine assembler, and quite easy to use after you get
the hang of it. (It does use subdirectories, but you'll find them helpful,
too.)

I'd recommend more of an introductory book. This one is a "second"
book which has a "library" of routines.
Have you checked at 6502.org for programming information?
