Need help with cabling.



I'm re-posting this in its own thread.  I think nobody's reading the 
original thread...


I've got the serial cable set up properly (i think).  Ethernet modem mode
now works from the GS.  I can dial out and answer calls using Proterm.
However, the telnet session terminates at random times.

When I set the BBS up on it, I telnet in, the BBS answers the call, and as
soon as the BBS starts sending the login screen, the telnet session
terminates and all the characters that the BBS is sending out get looped
back to the BBS.

I read this in the Moxa user's manual:

[Disconnection request from the local side]
When NPort Express is in data mode, the user can drive the DTR signal to OFF
or send the "+++" from the local serial port to the NPort Express.  NPort
Express will enter the command mode and return the "NO CARRIER" message via
the serial port, and then input the "ATH" for shot down tcp connection after
1 second.

Ok, here's the rub.  I used the following to make my cable.

 IIgs            PC  Female Dsub
Mini-Din 8   Dsub-25F  or  Dsub-9F   Dsub Signal

  3           3             2         RXD
  5           2             3         TXD
  4,8         7             5         GND
  2           4             7         RTS
  1           5,6,8         1,6,8     CTS, DSR, DCD
  7           20            4         DTR


I ignored the pin numbers on the Dsub-9F connectors because they are
different on the DE-311.  I connected the IIgs Mini-Din 8 pins to the
respective SIGNALS on the DE-311.  It works great.  When the user terminates
the telnet session, the BBS recognized a "dropped carrier" and resets.
However, the DTR is connected to the DCD input on the GS port.  If I
disconnect that to stop the random telnet terminations, I lose the ability
to to detect a "dropped carrier".

Here are how the pins are defined on the DE-311 box:

DB9 Female:
1    DCD
2    TxD
3    RxD
4    DSR
5    GND
6    DTR
7    CTS
8    RTS

If you can give me any insight, it would be appreciated.

I know also that the GS port is an RS422 port.  The DE-311 can be a RS422
device also.  Here are the pinouts for that configuration:

1    RxD-(A)
2    RxD+(B)
3    TxD+(B)
4    TxD-(A)
5    GND
6    CTS-(A)
7    CTS+(B)
8    RTS+(B)
9    RTS-(A)

Would it be better to hook this up as an RS422 interface?  I've tried but
can't figure out pins 6-9 and where they go on the GS port.
