It might seem wasteful - but when a company has excess "dead" inventory,
they may have to dispose of it. It depends on their finanical situation, but
landfilling is pretty common with tech companies especially when the items
are proprietarty. When a company writes off something that couldn't be
transferred, liquidated or donated, the excess is usually destroyed.
Landfilling is relatively cheap, and qualifies as destruction under tax law.
