If you have Linux running, take the "before" and "after" disk images,
run them through "xxd" to get a hex dump, and feed those into "diff".
That'll tell you which bytes are different, and what got changed.  If
one particular byte value is getting trashed, e.g. Ctrl-S isn't getting
through or something is doing an EOL conversion, you'll be able to see it.
