I have found it to be musch harder than I thought also.  but persistence 
pays off.  I figured out that you can use comm software and modems on 
both ocmputers you want to connect together, then just take a phone 
cable form one modem to the other.  Type ATD on one, then type ATA on 
the other and they will talk to each other.  Then just start a file 
transfer.  (AT is the modem attention command, and D is Dial, A is 
answer.  ATDial on one and ATAnswer on the other.)

Easy.

Of course I have found that a 'null modem' cable hooks the computers 
together directly wihtout the modems,  just bring up your communicaitons 
software and start tranferring files, usually faster than you can via modem.

I like to use 8 bit software that was beofree the IIgs so I actually 
keep a Super Serial card in slot 2 for 8 bit software (ADT) and I can 
still use a modem plugged into the modem port on the IIgs as the 
software accesses the 'modem port' directly from the GSOS telecom 
software.  (On a IIgs, you may officially use a slot for one of your 
cards or use the 'port' associated with it.  You select whcih is to be 
active in the control panel, but sometimes you can get away with using 
both.)

So if you look at the FAQs and still have issues getting your set-up to 
work, drop a note here and we'll see if we can't find a solution. 
Chances are that a bunch of folks here have already run into yany issue 
you may run up against.
