I've been looking around at a hardware solution for putting an Apple BBS
online, or making outgoing calls via ethernet. I've come across this
product which has "Ethernet Modem" capabilites. It acts as a standard modem
to the computer (uses the standard modem command set) and uses ethernet
instead of a phone line. The representative from the company says that it is
able to "dial" out as well as "answer" the phone. Supposedly, if you send
it an "ATDTxx.xx.xx.xx" it will connect you to a remote host. I wonder if
this would allow the GS via Marinetti to access the internet??? Also, when
a remote caller telnets in, it will send a "RING" and "CONNECT" to the
computer. A BBS program would be able to work just like it was connected to
an actual phone modem. The DCD line is also controlled by the state of the
telnet connection. Telnet session terminates, DCD line drops, BBS resets.
BBS sends "+++ATH", telnet session is dumped.
Only thing is it costs about $150. But how many of us paid much more than
that for a 9600 baud modem back in the day???
