The HID driver functionality is not too complicated, and does not require
much speed.  It also has the advantage of being a "common interface" for
several different device types.

The only other class of devices I can think of that can share a lot of
interface functionality is the "storage" class, which, though it is more
complex, would also have a fair amount of utility.

I'm guessing that most people don't realize the extremely high
degree of complexity that lurks beneath the surface of USB--
and the relatively low degree of standardization between devices.

That's why many USB devices for the PC come with a driver disk.
