Actually, the Unix clock dies in 2036. There was quite a bit of
discussion about this "impending" problem in the early 1990s.
My recollection about why they used 1904 matches that of another poster.
It was so they didn't have to worry about the 100-but-not-400 exception.

No. At a unit of one second, a 32-bit unsigned integer counts off
not-quite 136.1 years.
