Re: bragging rights..might have something unique ...modified apple //e pretty wild looking

i posted the actual cards and some more info on another post here...i've not
really tested fully apple regular type software with it..but again
i think it prob will work in that the apple //e kernal test comes up ok..

anyway the author/inventor of the particular cards i mentioned in the prev
post like 5min ago...replied to me with more info on the stuff
and dapple systems...i think he is fairly amused that i actually have a
complete system that works...anyway..he goes into more detail below

anyway...if you follow this thread prev ...he also is the one i guoted
before on general info...in my orig post etc etc

anyway this is what he says further about the whole slew of this apple //e
modified by dapple systems...again he is the developer of the imageworks
display card (slot 3) modified by dapple and the imagemaster that is in the
proslot setup in slot 7 .as seen below i have the one he mentions as prob an
imageworks ii version in that i have the slanted //e edge on this board..see
below and .see prev posts on this thread....to clarify some of this i've
posted here...

it also states below..that it was prob a $10,000 setup (on the cheap)
zowie...

quote by maker of the imageworks dapple cards in the beast

It is a pretty rare setup. Dapple didn't sell very many, maybe a dozen or
two of that version. It sounds like you have the earliest incarnation when
The ImageWorks was a display card and the capture was done with the
ImageMaster, or in this case perhaps, digitized directly by the microscope
electronics. The two knobs are probably gain and offset for the input
signal.

The software is by a professor (name escapes me for some reason but I used
to talk to him all the time) who wrote a book on stereology, the measurement
of the sizes and areas of things in video pictures. What percentage of that
mineral is gold? Make a thin slice, stick it in the EM (electron microscope)
and run the software. If I find the book I'll send the name. My demo won't
run on that setup since all those boards were modified for Dapple. Is the
board rectangular or does it have the full size Apple IIe shape with the
sloping end? If not rectangle, it should say ImageWorks II, and they can be
a lot of fun since they have a built in video frame grabber.

Dapple did OK with these for several years. It turned out that they were
fast enough to keep up with the data rates of the microscopes and a heck of
a lot cheaper than the DEC and HP based systems other people were selling.
It was like $10,000 versus $40,000. The real value was in the software of
course.

Other customers built their own simpler systems. I even modified a set of
boards for an Italian researcher who used three to get red, green, and blue
for 24 bits of full color from his Apple //gs. He published some nice
research and another researcher in Greece bought a bunch of boards and wrote
software for his labs. I remember Ontario Hydroelectric bought several and
Bell Labs bought a bunch to set up an inexpensive test of video
conferencing. Those who could see past the "toy" nature of the Apple II
saved a heap of money on imaging systems.

The last I heard, one of the folks from Dapple was still making software for
scopes and stuff for the PC or PowerMacs. I think this is him. He was a self
taught programmer kid back then.

The Professor, John ..........Russ. Aha!

http://www.drjohnruss.com/about.html

is still working in imaging.

anyway...thats prob it....like i said prob be a shame to break it up...i'
doubt i'd ever figure out how to get it back together again..and you never
know...may trip over and electron microscope someday and viola...apple //
mad scientist extrodanare....
