Are you saving everything in the root directory? If so, you could
just be running out of space to put the directory entry for the new
file. ProDOS disks, for some reason I've never quite figured out a
satifactory answer for, have a fixed root directory size of 4 blocks.
Sub-directories will grow dynamically as needed but the root one does
not so you are limited to somewhere between 51 and 55 files in the
root directory (I can't remember the exact number and my references
manuals aren't handy to check).
If I'm putting lots of small files onto a disk I always use
sub-directories to store them in to avoid this problem.
