This won't help your particular situation but when using a Gatorbox, I am
pretty sure I found it necessary to enter my ISP dns server address in the
MacIP configuration screen ... I can go back and take it out to see if it
breaks ...

You may want to put you Mac on  shared hub and try to get a sniffer on that
segment to see the traffic flow ...that has helped me quite a bit when
debugging my Apple II ethernet drivers ...
