Hi folks.

Has anyone got any suggestions on where I can look for information that will allow me to connect my //c to my G4 tower running Mac OS X 10.2? Has anyone in this group even taken on such a challenge?

The tower has 4 real serial ports installed and they work with OS X just fine. A few years back, when I had some x86 machines with Linux lying around, I managed to set up the "getty" in Linux to accept the //c as a dumb terminal. However, I don't see any "getty" in Mac OS X, nor do I find the "rc.serial" scripts or anything that remotely looks like them.

Right now, the //c talks to OS X by way of a Mac OS X GUI-based terminal program that I execute from my user space in OS X. It works for simple file transfers but I ultimately would like to be able to log into my //c and, using the G4 to provide shell services, use the Internet directly from the //c.

Any ideas on where to look would be appreciated. Thanks!

Steve

On the //c side try something like Proterm.
I would have thought the process on the Mac was identical to Linux since
OS X is *NIX based. Perhaps (since you have everything else working
already) you may want to see if you can find an FAQ or HOWTO for OS X on
serial connections. Once you are connected it SHOULD be easy.

No need for me to use Proterm. I'm using Modem Manager and it works quite well. :)

Mac OS X has little, if any, Apple factory support for real serial ports. Considering that my Power Mac G4, built in 1999 has NO serial ports at all (a Keyspan SXPro PCI adapter with four ports on it and included Keyspan drivers provide my serial communications), it predates a usable Mac OS X by almost two years. I can understand why Apple chose not to include serial port communications tools (at least those that are easily accessible).

A trip through the Mac OS X Darwin filesystem has yielded no useful information on serial port communications. There's a blurb about it within the Mac OS X developer's documentation, but I'm not versed enough to understand the technical aspects of what it's telling me. :)

I'll continue my search to see if I can find some getty-like solution that's been made available for Mac OS X. So far, searches on GnuOSX and similar open source sites have turned up nothing.

I was just curious to see what solutions other Apple ][ users may have stumbled onto. :)

Thanks.
