Hi Bill,

This is actually covered in a few different books on Apple - not least 
Infinite Loop, by Michael S Malone(?). There's another book whose name 
escapees me, but it relates a story of some hardware guru at Apple 
inserting a disk controller into the Apple II with the Mac prototype in 
it while the machine was running to allow reading/writing of data to 
disk!

If I think of it, I'll let you know.
