Why is that, Paul?
Scanning in grayscale, even if only to 2- or 3-bit depth,
should preserve some sub-pixel resolution which can
be recovered by thresholding at higher resolution if
desired.
Are you saying that current OCR packages are not
smart enough to do adaptive thresholding?
No argument about the increased file size, but it must
be weighed against the higher monochrome resolution
required to obtain the same effective (anti-aliased)
resolution.
The biggest bandwidth waster I see is not adjusting
the thresholds to saturate the background, causing
lots of bytes to be wasted on preserving the grain
of the paper.
