First of all, I wouldn't recommend Microsoft lookOut-Anything for reading
mail or news.  That said, I'm not that familiar with newsreader options.

What I do know, though, is that whatever newsreader you use, you can
probably write some kind of script for it which you can fire off
automagically using some kind of an event scheduler.  In the UNIX world,
for example, you could run a chron script that would automagically visit
the NNTP server and download all the new messages to a local news spool. 
The trick would be figuring out some way to send the following sequence of
commands:

connect to nntp server
select all unread
download all selected
disconnect

There has to be a way to do it.  I would start by looking for
old-fashioned offline newsreaders...newsreaders that are optimized for
offline reading.  

Hmmm......I wonder if you could adapt a QWK! system.......
