Looks like most of your questions are answered in the Apple II FAQs:
http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/Csa2FLUTILS.html
ftp://ground.ecn.uiowa.edu/apple2/Faqs/Formatted/Csa2FLUTILS.txt
You can get bunches of Applesoft BASIC programs on Ground, Asimov, GS
WorldView, and other archives. For links see ...

ftp://ground.ecn.uiowa.edu/apple2/Faqs/Formatted/Csa21MAIN3.txt
Mostly, the programs will be in the form of Applesoft BASIC files which
are ready to run (usually in .shk files on places like Ground) or on shrunk
disks (.sdk files) or on disk images (.dsk files which may be in .zip or
.dsk.gz compressed form-- use WinZIP).
Source files for BASIC programs-- like the Text of a BASIC program in a
Text file-- seem to be relatively rare.
If you want to be able to easily edit Applesoft BASIC programs, be sure
to get Beagle's Program Writer. It's on GSWV at ...
