A-ha! Apparently if there is only one file in the directory OA-DELETE
doesn't work - just goes back to the CAT DOCTOR menu without giving the
option to rewrite the directory. I would never have figured that out if
I hadn't booted GS/OS and left the finder.data file behind. 

Did I mention that I LOVE Prosel?

Well, I'm glad I didn't have to do anything too drastic (unless you
count the hour and a half I spent archiving all my files in sheer
terror). Thanks much for the help...
