     Not sure how things may work on a modern Mac. In general, you can
recover stuff from messed word processor files by forcing the file type to
Text. The resulting file may contain garbage looking stuff when viewed by a
Text editor; but, unless it's totally bombed, you should be able to pick out
and save your text.
