In a way, I am thankful we had copy protected software in the
70s and 80s. Learning how to deprotect programs, figuring out
data formats and disassembling code was a tremendously interesting
way to learn assembly language and Apple II internals.
I probably had more fun boot-tracing The Bard's Tale, and hacking
the data disks to give my characters 65535 hit points, than
actually playing the game -- which of course I played honestly,
otherwise why play? The hacking part was my reward for winning.
