This harware is what allows the card to read/ write 800k Mac formatted disks or any standard diskette. If the disks are 5.25", then obviously it will not be Mac formatted but it will be magnetic pulses none the less.
And yes, there were several versions produced due to the changing technology of the drives and mostly the marketing of the product. In the end, copying disks was not the big concern but moving data back and forth in the business community was. The changes to the card's firmware and accompanying software show this.
I have the last version 3.0 of the card I got from a friend who purchased it to duplicate protected PC disks after he had a crash. He never did use it and it eventually found it's way to me. :)
