This is right (the high order bit of each byte is unused), although from
it starts in the aux bank, not main.
If you add an Extended AppleColor 80 column card (used back then to drive
the AppleColor Monitor 100) you can (in addition to a true monochrome and
true color mode) select a 'mixed mode' in which the high order byte is
used to determine whether that particular byte is color or mono.
Unfortunately this adapter never took off, although the RGB add ons for
RamWorks and clones emulate the same behavior as the extended card.
