Get an Apple II reference manual, Parallel interface card, and you are
set. You can use the gameport but this requires some extra circuitry
to get more outputs.
With a parallel card you can turn on/off 8 LED's without any extra
circuits. Just connect the LED's to the ground and OUT pins on the
card. Write a 1 to the correct bit on the parallel cards OUTPUT
register, and you turn on the LED. To turn an RC servo requires some
assembly programming for timing. You need one output bit to control a
servo. Other things to control are DC motors and Stepper motors.
Inputs are easily handled too, like microswitches and temperature
sensors.
You might be able to do it in BASIC. I have the software to control a
servo which I wrote for my robot (http://rich12345.tripod.com)
Email me and I'll give you all the information I have on the subject.
