That actually made sense to me. A floppy disk with only one sense hole when
flipped would provide no hole over the photo detector.
The author was suggesting a fix using a magnetic reed switch. Basically
cutting out the photo detector and attaching the reed switch to the wires.
Then gluing a small magnet to the floppy drive flywheel and affixing the
switch in close proximity to the flywheel so that as the magnet passes by
the switch is made.
