The purpose of a reserve price is to give the seller more flexibility.  
If the reserve price is too high and is not met, the seller has the 
option to offer the item to the highest bidder.  Conversely, if a seller 
sets a minimum bid that's too high, he or she may end up with zero bids 
and no sense of what people are willing to pay for the item.

eBay OWNZ. (Although I did lose a nice copy of Fathoms 40 tonight to a 
chap who thought it was worth a *lot* more than I did.)
