Bingo, Simon!

The British pound sign was certainly functioning as #, but the ][+ I had 
years ago used #, so I'd rather use that. Thanks for the quick reply.

I'd never noticed that switch, but, as I said, I don't get to play with 
this machine nearly as much as I'd like. I've had it nearly a year and 
on the few occasions I'd booted it up hadn't realised it had a no-slot 
clock. The recent bulk purchase probably put the idea of a no-slot clock 
in my head, so when I booted the machine today, I realised that's what 
it must be. Looked inside, and there was the piggy-backing chip.

One by one my understandings of this machine are coming together. And 
it's certainly been fun playing Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle 
Wolfenstein this afternoon - if only I could find my maps that I made 
years ago :)
