seems strange that a monochrome monitor is bundled with it. (I ran mine
with a Monitor II for years...but then mine's a "stealth GS.")

Yes, just imagine what $248 can get you in semi-modern computing. This
guy makes it sound like you are about to edit MPEG-4 while burning DVD's
on the "professional" system.
